weight and performance calculations for the F.B.A. type H

FBA type H (s/n 5) on display at the Royal Museum of the Armed Forces and of Military History in Brussel. In the museum it is indicated as a Schreck type H, referring to the designer Louis Schreck. It has a Hispano Suiza 8A V-engine. This serial 5 is the sole surviving Type H in the world. © bvdz

F.B.A. type H

role : light maritime two-seat patrol aircraft, ASW

importance : ****

first flight : operational : June 1917

country : France

design : Louis Schreck

production : 2000 aircraft

general information :

The Type H was the major production version of the FBA series and was operated by

several air arms during the latter part of the First World War. The great majority

served with French and Italian forces.

The Belgians operated the type H from September 1917. Smaldeel Calais (l’escadrille

d’hydravion Belges) operated 5 FBA Type H over the North Sea and the Canal coast for ASW (anti-submarine), sea-mine spotting and reconnaissance duties. Two Belgian type H flying boats were used to ferry king Albert I and queen Elisabeth over the Canal to Folkestone on 05 July 1918. At first these aircraft (serials 1-5) had 150 hp Hispano Suiza 8Aa engines, but soon some of the aircraft were fitted with the more powerful 180 hp HS 8Ab engine or a Lorraine 8N of 160 hp. In an attack on 11 August 1918 a German U-boat type UB III (possible UB-108) was successful bombed and sunk by a flight of two Belgian and one France seaplanes.

Italy built 982 type H flying boats in license by several firms, but mostly by SIAI. Most of the Italian type H’s were powered by a 160 hp Isotta-Fraschini V4B. engine.

The type H was possibly the most widely built flying-boat on either side in WWI.
